Felix and Norman Caldwell were inventors from South Australia and in 1907 patented a four-wheel drive system (Commonwealth of Australia Patent # 9493/1907 "Improvements in and connected with driving and steering motor propelled vehicles").
In 1910 Henery Vale joined the brothers and provided financial support. Caldwell Vale was created, manufacturing from Sydney, New South Wales, making motor-ploughs, tractors, locomotives and other motor-driven vehicles. In 1912 Felix Caldwell patented an "Improved compensating gear for motor vehicles" (Commonwealth of Australia Patent # 4959/1912). The company was taken over in 1916 by Purcell Engineering.
