In 1954, Freighters of Melbourne, Victoria took over Lawton of Adelaide, South Australia and in 1957 Freighter-Lawton Industries Limited (or Freighter Lawton) was formed. The businesses were body-builders and produced buses, industrial machinery etc. In 1963 was renamed Freighter Industries and in 1976 Pressed Metal Corporation (PMC) bought them out and continued production of buses.
Freighters also contributed to defence projects during the World Wars and after including the vehicles Leep (i.e similar to a Jeep and named after Freighter's founder, Noel Peel, being Peel backwards) and the Imp.
